Customs Clearance and Consultation
Obtain the Security only Specialists can provide
If you truly wish to avoid New Zealand Customs penalties and prosecutions for the long-term, it's important to pay close attention to this area of your business. Cutting costs here is not wise.
Whether you need standard customs clearance for your imports and exports or more complex customs consultation services, you can trust us to do the job well... New Zealand Customs formalities are a specialist area for Beacon Global. The Beacon staffs responsible for clearing your goods through New Zealand Customs have decades of experience to draw from and require years of training before the company will even allow them to handle your Customs requirements.
Why? Because mistakes cannot only be costly... this area can have enormous influence on the movement of your freight, particularly if other Government Border Agencies have an interest such as MAF Quarantine - and in New Zealand it's at this point they'll get involved. The inconvenience of clearance problems can have a cumulative effect starting from general delays in delivery to ongoing problems every time you import. Even a badly prepared export clearance can cause problems especially if the goods are later returned to New Zealand for any reason.
Try a holistic approach to the entire deal and have us take care of your international freighting too - air or sea, if we're organising your freight along with your customs clearance and delivery, the entire job from start to finish will be so well coordinated, you'll hardly know what a bad shipping experience is.
Do you know if your goods will attract import taxes? It's a good idea to find this out before any goods are purchased and freighted - contact us in advance with a detailed description of the goods and where they were manufactured and we'll tell you. If duty is expected, you'll then be able to discuss with us the option of applying for concessionary entry or accepting the tax liabilities and factoring it in to your costs.
Maybe you'd like an audit. Much as you would with your personal or business tax, a random audit of your import customs obligations actually makes for good business practice to keep your business healthy.
Each time you import into New Zealand you're accountable to both New Zealand Customs and Inland Revenue not to mention the responsibilities you have to other Government Border Agencies such as MAF Quarantine, Department of Health and many others.
If you'd like an independent audit of your previous customs work to make sure everything's in order, we're happy to help. We can take a close look at the duty paid (or not as the case may be) and check whether your business is operating within the law... better to find out from us than a Government Department who can go back 7 years looking for penalty.
So keep safe, contact us now so we can take good care of all your customs needs.
|
Exporting
Preserve & Grow Your Export Markets
Your business undoubtedly works very hard to present and sell your products to the world markets... the last thing you need is to treat your buyers to horrible shipping experiences because this can taint your product and damage your reputation as a great supplier to work with.
It's important that the careful presentation of your product extends to the paperwork. You could spend considerable time finding the cheapest shipping service or even the most expensive but if the paperwork is sloppy, even the best shipping service won't help if your buyer can't get the cargo cleared and delivered at their end without fuss.
How about packing? Ships roll on the seas and cargo can shift a lot inside a shipping container. Likewise, aircraft experience turbulence and just the loading and unloading process throughout a journey by both air and sea can toss the contents around... and your exposure is increased with every tranship throughout a journey. Are you confident your packaging is sufficient to protect the product through all this? Have you considered palletising the cargo to reduce handling problems? Short-cuts taken here to save money or whatever can end in tears.
What are your transport options? While there are plenty of options to choose from, common sense and a long-term view for future business should play a big part in your decision-making process. We cannot stress enough that you should never make decisions about anything on price alone - while it's important, it should not be the primary focus... a hard thing to put into practice for sure.
Are you entitled to a tax refund? It's really important to take care when the export customs clearance is done. All exports from New Zealand require an export customs clearance before goods can be delivered to the export depot or wharf and if your goods are or include any items that were imported into New Zealand that paid Customs Duty, you're entitled to get this duty refunded provided certain rules are followed.
Try a holistic approach to the entire deal and have us take care of your international freighting too - air or sea, if we're organising your freight along with your local cartage and export customs clearance, the entire job from start to finish will be so well coordinated, you'll never know what a bad shipping experience is... and neither will your buyer.

Importing
Preserve and Grow Your Markets Safely
No one wants to lose important business because cargo has not arrived when it was expected. Your business works hard to create a market for your imported product in New Zealand and suffering because of bad or late paperwork, sloppy service, lack of communication or whatever is completely unnecessary.
Should you be paying import taxes? New Zealand has two types of tax at the border, Customs Duty is one; GST (Goods and Services Tax) is the other. They are both collected by New Zealand Customs and it's important to know that you'll likely attract one or both every time you import... there are few exceptions. So, it's important that your paperwork is up to scratch so your goods can be accurately assessed - and that it's received well prior to the arrival of the goods.
You or your overseas supplier could spend a lot of time finding the cheapest method of shipping but if the paperwork is sloppy, an inexpensive shipping service won't help if you can't get the cargo cleared and delivered without fuss... the costs of delay will mount up fast to neutralise any benefit from a lesser freight cost.
Which New Zealand port do you want the goods to arrive at? Sounds like a stupid question but often, if the freight has been booked by a business unfamiliar with this country or disinterested with providing quality service, it's surprisingly common how often the freight is sent to a port miles away from the one that would have been more appropriate - this just means more delays for you, more cost and worst of all, business at risk.
New Zealand has strict MAF Quarantine legislation in place to protect not just our flora and fauna but our primary industry too. We have a lot to protect. Being that New Zealand is a tiny previously inaccessible island in the middle of the Pacific that with every import increases its exposure to bugs and other things that don't belong, it's important that our Border Agencies do their job well. The downside to this for Importers is the cost and delay that can eventuate - for instance, if you import a Full Container Load of goods into New Zealand without both a Quarantine Declaration and an approved facility to unload the container, you'll run into expensive problems.
Do the research before you import anything new - know who's interested and why then make sure to allow time up your sleeve to get everything right.

Sea Freight
Move your cargo the way You want
If you need an economical method of transport, seafreight is the perfect solution.

Cargo Insurance
Have a back up plan
For the most part this is sadly an unappreciated and misunderstood area of importing and exporting... often dismissed as another unwanted expense - until something goes horribly wrong and the blame game begins.
You probably wouldn't buy an expensive car without insuring it or spend the large amount needed to buy a property and decide not to insure it - you just can't trust everyone or leave things to chance. Given the considerable distances your product will travel by air or seafreight, there's not a great deal of logic in relying entirely on the carefulness of people every step of the way to ensure nothing is lost or damaged - not without getting insurance cover to back you up "just in case".
It's a common belief that containers are shipped with their doors locked. A container may need to be opened by local Authorities at any port throughout its journey so rather than using locks, a device called a container seal is used. This seal is not designed to prevent a break-in but rather to indicate tampering... so anyone can get in to a container at any time.
There are many risks with sea, air and land transport. Just like motor vehicles, ships and aircraft can have accidents, experience electrical disruptions and deal with bad weather problems - they can also break down and experience all kinds of delays such as delays with loading and unloading, quarantine and transferring cargo - all these things can create risks for your freight.
Other obvious risks include pillage (theft), lost cargo, hijacking and damage (from water or condensation, poor packing or rough handling).
It's also important for you to be aware of the "General Average". Although rare, where a vessel is in peril, to prevent loss of life, a ships captain will do whatever is necessary to save the crew and vessel. This may mean dumping cargo overboard. Where a General Average is declared, all parties including the ship-owner must contribute to the costs and cargo will usually be held as security for payment.
Unlike motor vehicle or home and contents insurance, marine (cargo) insurance is a totally different animal - it's a very specialised kind of insurance because so many different freight handlers are involved in the movement of your freight from the moment it's packed to leave to the time it's unpacked on arrival. There can be considerable work involved in pinpointing where and who may be to blame for freight getting damaged or just plain disappearing. After the finger pointing, denials and likely claim rejections from the freight handling companies involved throughout the chain, the only people who will ultimately catch your fall are the marine insurers.
So what can you do? Talk with us about insuring your cargo before anything is moved... try a holistic approach to the entire deal and have us take care of your international freighting, customs clearance, cartage and cargo insurance - air or sea, if we're organising the entire job from start to finish your imports or exports will be so well coordinated, it'll reduce the risks of "wearing" a bad shipping experience.
|
Storage, Pack/Unpack, Distribution
Gain Valuable Space at Your Place
Given the price of property these days, many find themselves making do with what they've got - cramming in stock or shifting it around to find space that really might be better served for other purposes in your business... and then there's the MAF Quarantine issues to deal with when importing full shipping containers into New Zealand.
You can save yourself extra work and make space without fuss by shifting out the problem. Even if you already store your stock someplace other than your place, there's a lot to be said for storing it with the same people who deal with it right from the beginning... less handling reduces the risk of theft and damage.
Anyone with a store can look after my freight, right? Not all store facilities are the same - if you're importing, your freight has not cleared Customs and you need to get it off the wharf or transfer it some place friendly, it can only move to a facility that operate a "Customs Bond" store. Likewise, if your freight has not cleared MAF Quarantine it can only be moved to a "MAF Standard" facility.
The facility we operate is all of those things - plus a lot more. You have the convenience of having us pack or unpack your shipping containers, take care of your MAF Quarantine obligations or just take in your freight for storage and/or distribution... try a holistic approach to the entire deal and have us take care of your international freighting, customs clearance, cartage, cargo insurance, pack or unpack and storage - air or sea, if we're organising the entire job from start to finish your imports or exports will be so well coordinated and you'll have freed up so much time to work on increasing your markets, you'll wonder why you didn't talk with us earlier.

Local and National Transport
Gain more Choice & Control
When you need your freight collected from your door for export or delivered to your door on import, flexibility with Carriers is vital - particularly if time is an issue.
I know a guy who can do this for me already. Co-ordination is a vital ingredient for an import or export to run smooth from beginning to end - and where time has become an issue, you often can't depend on that one guy to do the job when you really need. We have a large number of Carriers working for us so it makes sense to keep the continuity of your entire freight movement by dealing with one contact right through... plus we may often have a carrier sitting right around the corner who can assist fast.
Save yourself the bother of locating the precise whereabouts of your import cargo. Freight can often not be where you expect it when you expect it and it can take considerable time and patience in actually getting your hands on it... then there's finding a Carrier to suit your delivery times and the added burden of physically running about getting the correct documents to the Carrier in enough time. If you've got better things to do with your time than run around after trucking companies and freight depots, you'd be better off spending less of it issuing us with standing instructions - we'll follow these every time unless you tell us otherwise.
New Zealand Customs X-ray facility could also throw a spanner in the works. This facility x-rays full shipping containers and air cargo units - your freight could be diverted there while containerised at any time... this means even more time and co-ordination, particularly if Customs should be unhappy with the x-ray results and order the unpack of the container while at this facility.
Moving export cargo comes with its own set of problems too. Security procedures prevent export cargo from being accepted at the export port or depot without an export Customs Clearance. Getting freight from your door to the right depot at the right time with the right documents can also be a stress you could well do without... and let's not forget the x-ray facility.
Try a holistic approach to the entire deal and have us take care of your international freighting, customs clearance and pickup or delivery - air or sea, if we're organising the entire job from start to finish your freight will be so well coordinated, it'll reduce the risks of "wearing" a bad shipping experience.
