Marine Transit Insurance

We can provide marine transit insurance cover for imports and exports with our hassle-free international freight, customs and storage services. And because the underwriter is in New Zealand, the international insurance cover our marine brokers provide may offer some advantages to local importers and exporters.
For the most part, shipping insurance is sadly an unappreciated and misunderstood area of importing and exporting, often dismissed as another unwanted expense until something goes horribly wrong and the blame game begins.
With that in mind, here are some important considerations for you as a New Zealand importer or exporter:
  • Shipping container doors aren’t locked. Rather than a lock, a numbered device called a container seal is used. This seal is not designed to prevent a break-in but rather to indicate tampering. Containers can easily be opened

  • Be aware of the “General Average”. Although rare, to prevent loss of life if a ship is in peril, the captain will do whatever is necessary to save the crew & ship. This may mean dumping cargo overboard. Where a General Average is declared, all parties including the ship-owner must contribute to the costs. Remaining cargo will usually be held as security for payment

  • Water Damage & Humidity. Freight can get wet either through condensation or simply by being left or loaded in the rain. The damage water can do to goods is truly horrible

  • “Stuff” happens all the time. Ships & planes get hijacked, have accidents & get delayed by bad weather or strikes. Cargo can get lost or stolen (pillaged) & handlers can make mistakes. Ultimately, your insurer will be your best backup

  • Who’s to blame? From the moment it’s packed right through to its ultimate destination, cargo can be handled by multiple parties. Pinpointing where or who is responsible for damaged or lost freight is difficult & time consuming. This is why marine insurance is so specialised & unusual. A sound freight insurance policy may be the only compensation for your costs

  • Consider the value of your cargo plus all the freight & delivery costs against the cost of a transit insurance cover. Then you can make a sound decision based on facts & figures

Leave nothing to chance. Given the considerable distance your cargo will travel by air freight or sea freight, you can’t depend entirely on the carefulness of people every step of the way to ensure absolutely nothing is lost or damaged. A sound marine insurance cover is the best backup you can buy. And because we like to keep things nice and simple, you’ll find it really easy to instruct us that you want cargo insurance before you have us freight anything for import or export.
